"Immigrants: we get the job done" -- Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton
Sonia Gittelman and Samuel Gold
Sonia Gittelman was the oldest daughter of Nathan Gittelman and Jennie Richman. She was born in Turov in 1906-1908 and immigrated with her mother and siblings in 1921 to join her father in Detroit, arriving in NYC on May 10, 1921, aboard the SS Mount Carroll out of Hamburg.
Sonia Gittelman married Samuel Gold in Detroit on June 7, 1925. Samuel was born in 1895-1897, the son of Paul Gold and Bessie Zipperman. The marriage records states that he was born in Russia, but on the 1930 and 1940 US Censuses, he reported that he was born in Romania. According to the 1930 US Census, he immigrated in 1911.
By 1930, Samuel and Sonia were living at 3916 Fenkell Avenue. Samuel owned a ladies' wear store. Sonia was working as a clerk in a ladies' wear store, possibly the same one.
1940 found the couple living at 2740 Oakman Court. Samuel owned a dress factory, while Sonia was no longer working. The Golds were well-off enough to afford a maid.
Samuel may or may not be the Samuel Gold who described himself as the owner of the Gold Dress Co when he registered for the WWII draft in 1942. This Samuel stated that he was born in September 1896 in Bessarabia, which would account for the discrepany in birthplaces between Russia and Romania. However, he stated that he lived at 18094 Oak Drive, and for his contact, he listed one Shirley Gold who lived at 3729 West Boston Blvd.
Sonia passed away on April 30, 2004, in Oakland County, Michigan, and was buried at Adat Shalom Memoral Park. Her obituary mentions that she survived her husband Samuel and her sister, Rose Gittelman Schwartz, but that her brother Max was still alive. The obituary also mentions that Sonia had a son, Frederick, and two grandsons, Jonathan and Jeremy.
Given this information, Samuel would appear to be the Samuel Gold who passed away on January 17, 1978, in Oakland County and who's also buried at Adat Shalom Memorial Park.
