Joseph Cannon
Because Joseph Cannon's daughter Lavinia married Lowder Hearn, Joseph's family bible passed into the hands of Lavinia's younger brother Jacob, who gave it to his oldest son Burton, who gave it to his son Gibson. In 1891, Gibson showed the bible to William T. Hearne, the author of Brief History and Genealogy of the Hearne Family:
I here insert copy of the records of the old family Bible of Joseph Cannon, father-in-law of Clement Hearne, which was shown me in the spring of 1891 by Gibson Cannon, at his residence in Sussex Co., Del.
Births of Children.
Ebenezer Cannon, born Sept. 25, 1747. Constance Cannon, born Jan. 21, 1749. James Cannon, born Dec. 5, 1750. Joseph Cannon, born Dec. 26, 1752. Betty Cannon, born July 12, 1755. Anne Cannon, born Apr. 5, 1758. Lavinia Cannon, born Jan. 24, 1762. Jacob Cannon, born Jan. 31, 1767. Levi Cannon, born Feb. 19, 1769. Keziah Cannon, born June 16, 1770. Sally Wingate, born 1793. This last seems to be an odd record, though the Wingate family are all related to our family. I have often heard my grandfather Clement say that the Wingates at Frankfort, Ky., were our relatives, and also the Ward families, Junius R., of Scott Co., Ky., and Robert J., of Louisville, Ky., who both owned large plantations in Mississippi, were our relatives.
From the record of Jacob Cannon, who was born July 31, 1767:
Births of Children.
Burton Cannon, born May 26, 1800. Gibson Cannon, born Apr. 16, 1805. Lavinia Cannon, born December 7, 1807. Jacob Cannon, born June 10, 1816.
Burton Cannon, born May 26, 1800, had one son, Gibson Cannon, born Mar. 30, 1836, and whom I visited at his home in Delaware, May, 1891, and copied the above records from the old family bible of his great-grandfather, Joseph Cannon.
The mention of Sally Wingate makes for an especially "odd record" when one considers that William T. Hearne also recorded this as the name of the woman who married Thomas Hearne in the early 1700s. Other research suggests that Thomas' wife was actually named Sarah Newbold. Some of the confusion may be due to the fact that Joseph's fifth child, Betty or Betsey, married Phillip Wingate. Their six children included a daughter named Sally, although born in 1775 rather than 1793, and a son named Phillip born in 1793.
Joseph may be the son of Sarah Covington and James Cannon who married Ann(a) Jones - see for example Cannon Descendants and the notes on this site.
As mentioned above, Lavinia Cannon married Lowder Hearn. Her sister Keziah married Lowder's brother Clement.
