The Heise Family of Magdeburg

The city of Magdeburg lies in northern Germany, WSW of Berlin and southeast of Hamburg. At the opening of the 19th century, it lay within the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1806 the city surrendered to French troops during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1815, after Napoleon's defeat, Magdeburg was reacquired by Prussia and became the capital of the Prussian Province of Saxony.

On 14 Dec 1834, Luise Emilie Auguste Charlotte Nöhring and Heinrich August Heise married at the Johanniskirche in Magdeburg. The bride - called Charlotte in later records - was the daughter of Charlotte and Paul Nöhring. Her mother's last name may or may not have been Frohnecke. She was born 05 Jun 1817 and baptized in Magdeburg 22 Jun 1817. The groom was the son of Marie Dorothée Räbel and Gottfried Christian Heise born 26 Jun 1810. I haven't found a birth record for him and don't know where he was born. However his mother, Marie Dorothée died in Magdeburg at the age of 63 on 07 Nov 1849.

There's some confusion in the records with another Magdeburg couple, Charlotte Reitzenbeck and Caspar Heinrich Heise. However, I think I've been able to sort them out pretty well. As far as I can tell, Charlotte Nöhring and Heinrich August Heise had 15 children, of whom five died young:

At least two of Charlotte and Heinrich August's children emigrated to the United States, Carl August Rudolph born in 1839 and Paul Heinrich Georg Hans born in 1850. I don't have immigration records for eitehr, but I have some fairly definitive marriage records.

Charles August Rudolf Heise ("Rudolph") born in Magdeburg 1839-1841 married Caroline Johanna Jorns in Manhattan April 7, 1871.

Heinrich Hans Heise born in "Heizalburg in Preussen" 1850 married Mary McGuire in Manhattan September 13, 1875. I believe him to be the same person as Paul H Geo Hans Heise ("John") born in Magdeburg 1848-1853 who married Anna Franciska Ottilie Wilke Herrmann in Manhattan April 23, 1886. In their son's birth record, he's referred to as Paul Heinrich Hans Heise.

There are two more Manhattan records that might or might not be connected to Charlotte Nöhring and Heinrich August Heise.

Charles Heise born in Germany 1858 married Amelia Thiel in Manhattan June 8, 1881. The bride was norn in NYC in 1862, the daughter of William Thiel and Victoria Becker. I haven't been able to find any additional records for any of these four people. It's important to note that Charles' marriage record names his parents as Henry Heise and Charlotte. These are common names. It's entirely possible that his mother was not Charlotte Nohring and that his father was some other Heinrich Heise.

John Heise born in Germany 1863 died in Manhattan January 28, 1923. He was married and worked as a private detective. His death record names his parents as "Paul" Heise and Charlotte "Neohring." He was interred at the Fresh Pond Crematory in Queens. It's not impossible that he may have been the same person as Paul Heinrich Georg Hans Heise.
