Louise Treuer and Eugene Brooks

Eugene Brooks was born in Manhattan 17 Aug 1895, the son of Anna Rupp and Nicolaus Brooks. His birth record gives his name as Leo, but all later records refer to him as Eugene, Eugene L or Eugene Leo.

At the time of Eugene's birth, the family was living at 227 or 229 East 106th Street. By 1905, they'd moved to 650 East 12th Street, and by the time of Nicolaus' death on 28 Oct 1906, 415 East 86th Street.

Eugene's older brother Bruno enlisted in the US Army at Fort Slocum (on Davids' Island in the western end of Long Island Sound in the city of New Rochelle) on 14 Oct 1909.

By the time of the 1910 US Census, Anna, Anna's sister Charlotte and Eugene had moved to 1754 2nd Avenue. Anna and Charlotte were working as cooks in a bank. Fourteen-year-old Eugene was an errand boy in a butcher shop.

On 19 Dec 1912, Eugene followed in his brother's footsteps by enlisting in the US Army at West Point. (Bruno had re-enlisted at West Point three months earlier.) Eugene apparently had to lie about his age in order to get in - although he was actually 17 years, four months old, his enlistment papers say he was 19 years, five months old. Under "Regiment," Eugene's record has written "Det. QMD. MA." This might be a reference to the Quartmaster Department where Bruno was posted.

Eugene's enlistment records say he was honourably discharged 18 Dec 1916. However, he seems to have re-enlisted. As of 1920 he was still serving at West Point, his rank being Private 1st Class.

On 11 Nov 1922 Eugene married Louise Margaret Treuer at her parent's home in Patchogue, Long Island. Louise was born in Mount Vernon, New York, in December 1895, the daughter of Mary Legrand and John Treuer. Both Louise's parents were born in New York, but her grandparents were all immigrants. Her maternal grandmother was from Scotland, her maternal grandfather from Bavaria, her paternal grandmother from somewhere in Germany and her paternal grandfather from Baden.

Louise was a registered nurse, a graduate of the Mount Vernon Hospital School of Nursing.

Louise and Eugene's daughter Barbara was born 22 Dec 1925. At the time, the couple was living at 37 Beekman Avenue in Mount Vernon. By 1930 the family had moved to 111-11 208th Street in Hollis Township in Queens. They were to live at this address at least until Eugene's death. Eugene was working an as accountant at a brokerage firm, probably Dominick and Dominick of Wall Street. None of this information had changed at the time of the 1940 US Census, when Eugene registered for the WWII draft in 1942 or at the time of Eugene's death on 12 Mat 1947.

As a WWI veteran, Eugene was buried at the Long Island National Cemetery in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County.

I was unable to find any further information on Louise and Barbara.
