Ivy E Kendrick and Charles C Willy
Jacob C or Charles C Willy was born 26 Nov 1910 in Philadelphia, the son of Pauline Kappler and Nicholas George Willy. His birth record gives his name as Jacob C, but all subsequent records refer to him a Charles or Charles C. By 1910, he and his family were living at house his parents had bought at 2620 Hicks Street. As of 1930, Charles was working in photography as an engraver. Pauline sold the Hicks Street house sometime between 1937 and 1940. I don't know whether this was before or after Charles married Ivy E Kendrick.
Ivy was the daughter of Mary E Shull and Franklin Kendrick, born in Philadelphia 03 May 1912. The 1930 US Census notes that she was working in photography as a stenographer, which suggests that she and Charles may have met through their work. By 1940 they had married and moved out of Philadelphia, living on Lovell Street in Marple, Delaware County. Charles was working as a photo engraver for a photo engraving company.
I know what Ivy and Charles had at least one daughter, also named Ivy. The younger Ivy graduated from Gettysburg College in 1963 - and joined the Peace Corps, which at that time had only been in operation for two years. Ivy Kendrick Willy apparently shared her daughter's spirit of adventure. She spent the Christmas of 1963 in Colombia with her daughter! The Delaware County Times published 21 May 1964 advised readers that, "a Broomall mother who in 1963 spent Christmas with her daughter in Colombia, South America, will show slides of that trip tonight. Mrs. Charles C. Willy of Broomall will present slides of her daughter Miss Ivy Willy, now serving with the Peace Corps, at the meeting of the Woman's Association of the Marple Presbyterian Church at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Christian education building. Mrs. Willy will also explain the Corps training in New Mexico and the duties of those serving in Colombia. Miss Willy, a graduate of Charles E. Ellis School for Girls, Newtown Square, and Gettysburg College, received her Peace Corps training at the University of New Mexico beginning in July of last year. All women trained there at that time went to Colombia while the men went to Ecuador for the beginning of two years of service with the Corps."
For reference, Broomall is adjacent to Marple. They're both about 6 km ESE of Newtown Square.
Charles C Willy died 21 Jan 1990. Ivy Kendrick Willy died 16 Feb 2011. She was residing in Newtown Square at the time.
