Christina Schwind and Jacob Engel

Christina Schwind and Jacob Engel had their children christened in Freinsheim at about the same time as Anna Christina Nicola and Jacob Engel. This leads to some confusion, not helped by the 1798-1815 records gap.

However, note that these christenings take place during the period for which there are no records of Protestant christenings in the nearby town of Dackenheim. There's a fair amount of evidence that Christina Schwind, Jacob Engel and their children actually lived in Dackenheim. This raises the possibility that Christina's husband may have been the son of Maria Catharina Muschel and Hartmann Engel christened in Dackenheim in 1784 or his cousin, the son of Catharina Margaretha Wagner and Martin Engel christened in Dackenheim in 1770.

It seems to me less likely that Christina's husband would be either of the two Freinsheim candidates, Johann Jacob Engel born 1781 to Maria Christina Heck and Johann Woerner Engel and Johann Jacob Engel born 1782 to Christina Elisabetha and Henrich Engel.

Christina Schwind and Jacob Engel had at least two, possibly three children that I know of:

• Martin Engel appears to have been born before 1816. On 17 Apr 1845 he married Anna Maria Sülzer, the daughter of Catharina Elisabetha Benner and Johann Georg Sülzer. The marriage was recorded in both Dackenheim and Freinsheim;
• Jacob Engel was christened in Freinsheim 14 May 1817, although his marriage record gives his place of birth as Dackenheim. He married Anna Margaretha Kohl, the daughter of Anna Maria Henz and Jacob II Kohl, on 12 Mar 1844 in Bobenheim, 3 km west of Dackenheim;
• Anna Elisabetha christened 12 Mar 1820, the daughter of Christina and Jacob Engel, could be the daughter of either Christina Schwind and Jacob Engel or the daughter of Anna Christina Nicola and Jacob Engel.

A legal notice published 29 Mar 1828 and included in volume 11 of the Intelligenzblatt des Rheinkreises describes the foreclosure sale of property owned by Jacob Engel, farmer, and his wife Christina Schwind, both resident in Dackenheim. Apparently they owed money to\ Frau Eleonora Harscher, a pensioner formerly resident in Mannheim but now living in Lambsheim, the widow of the late Pastor Daniel Schäffer due to obligations dated 20 Dec 1817 and 07 Oct 1824. The property being sold consisted of:

• 88 ares 50 meters (3 Morgen 2 3/4) Acker (arable land); and
• 70 ares (2 Morgen 2 Viertel) Wingert (vineyard), made up of 10 pieces located in different parts of the Dackenheim area.

Jacob Engel died six months later. He was buried in Freinsheim 24 Sep 1828.

Christina died and was buried in Dackenheim 23 Jun 1855.

Anna Maria Sülzer and Martin Engel

I have two sets of christening records for the six children of Anna Maria Sülzer and Martin Engel. One set says they were christened in Freinsheim, the other set says Dackenheim. Here are the children:

• Catharina christened 16 Mar 1846;
• Sibilla christened 22 Sep 1848;
• Sophia christened 29 Nov 1850;
• Jacob christened 07 Jun 1853;
• Maria Magdalena christened 02 Nov 1856; and
• Martin christened 13 Mar 1859.

I don't have any further information on this family.

Anna Margaretha Kohl and Jacob Engel

Anna Margaretha Kohl and Jacob Engel apparently had only one child, a daughter named Katharina who was born 13 Aug 1844 and christened 16 Aug 1844 in Weisenheim am Berg.

Elisabetha Engel and Georg Heinrich Schiffer?

Anna Elisabetha Engel christened 12 Mar 1820 was possibly the Elisabetha Engel born in 1820 who married Georg Heinrich Schiffer in Freinsheim 16 Jul 1844. They raised their family in Großkarlbach where, unlike in Freinsheim, death records included the age of the deceased. Elisabetha's death record indicates that she was born in 1820.

Elisabetha and Georg Heinrich had five children, all christened in Großkarlbach:

• Heinrich born 22 Mar 1849, christened 29 Mar 1849;
• Elisabetha born 18 Mar 1851, christened 31 Mar 1851;
• Johannes born 19 Jun 1852, christened 04 Jul 1852;
• Jacob born 20 Jan 1854, christened 12 Feb 1854; and
• Georg born 26 Mar 1856, christened 15 Jun 1856. Died in Großkarlbach 21 Sep 1887.

Anna Elisabetha died in Großkarlbach on 20 Dec 1873.
