Susanna Philippina Webel and Heinrich Engel

Susanna Philippina Webel and Heinrich Engel married in Freinsheim 26 May 1840. Susanna Philippina was the daughter of Maria Catharina Pirmann and Christian Webel christened in Freinsheim 30 Nov 1816.

Heinrich was the son of Margaretha Krebil or Krabil and Martin Engel. As far as I can tell, he was connected with Herxheim, although not necessarily born there. Heinrich and Susanna Philippina's only child was christened in Herxheim, and his mother died in Herxheim 12 Feb 1837. Margaretha was 59 at the time of death, indicating that she was born in or about 1778. This in turn suggests that Martin was born 1763-1783. There are four candidates, whom I've listed in the order of likelihood:

The Intelligenzblatt des Rheinkreises volume 10 includes two mentions of a Martin Engel in Herxheim. One comes from a legal notice dated 08 Jun 1827 and describes him as a "Winzer," a wine grower, who occupies 1,048 square meters of arable land. The other notice is dated 21 Jul 1827 and describes him as sharing 12 ares of arable land and vineyard with Peter Schneider.

The thing is, Engel's not a Herxheim name. As far as I can tell, there were no Engels in Herxheim prior to the 19th century. The very first record I can find is that of Katharina Engel, daughter of Martin Engel, who married Johann Georg Brehm in Herxheim 23 Aug 1831. Their children were christened in Freinsheim and married in Dackenheim.

It would make a good deal of sense if Martin Engel was originally was Dackenheim and then moved to Herxheim, either before or after Katharina and/or Heinrich were born. (We don't know for sure that they're siblings.) It might help to know where Margaretha Krebil was born, but I can't find a birth or christening record for her at all.

All right, back to Susanna Philippina Webel and Heinrich Engel. As I mentioned above, they had one child that I know of. Their daughter Susanna Engel was born 06 Apr 1841 and christened in Herxheim 09 Apr 1841. However, she died and was buried in Freinsheim 03 Jan 1852.

I have no further information on this couple.
