The Engel Family of Dackenheim in the 19th Century

After the 1790s there are no specifically Protestant records for Dackenheim. For 1816-1838, there are records indicating that at least some Protestant Dackenheimers sought out christening, marriage and burial services in Freinsheim. Even in and after 1839, when records that don't specify religion appear for Dackenheim, there's a lot of duplication between Dackenheim and Freinsheim in christening and marriage records.

Meanwhile, Catholic records for Dackenheim resumed in July 180 after a much briefer records gap.

In trying to make connections between 18th and 19th century Engels in Freinsheim, I found it necessary first to sort out the Dackenheimer Engels from the Freinsheimer Engels. Keep in mind that Dackenheim was a much smaller place than Freinsheim. Meyers Orts- und Verkehrs-lexikon des deutschen Reichs (1871-1918) lists Dackenheim as having a population of 301, Freinsheim as having a population of 2,586. The current figures as of 31 Dec 2016 are 455 for Dackenheim and 5,072 for Freinsheim. A Freinsheimer would rarely need to go to Dackenheim for services they couldn't get in Freinsheim. Thus whenever a family has a connections on record with both, I've assumed that they're more closely associated with Dackenheim.

Bürgermeisters and Adjuncts of Dackenheim

Before we look at the list of Engels I found, it might be useful to look at the list of Bürgermeisters (mayors) and Adjuncts for Dackenheim in the early 19th century. In this table, IR stands for Intelligenzblatt des Rheinkreises. KBAIP stands for Königlich bayerisches Amts- und Intelligenzblatt für die Pfalz. KBKAP stands for Königlich-bayerisches Kreis-Amtsblatt der Pfalz.

Georg Spielmann, chosen as Bürgermeister in 1819, was probably the father of Anna Maria Spielmann, who married Johannes Engel.

Jakob Kröther, Adjunct from 1825 through 1834, was probably the Jakob Kröther who married Magdalena Engel, listed below.

Heinrich Engel, Bürgermeister from 1830 until 1836-1838, was probably the Heinrich Engel who married Catharina Stephan. I know he was still active as Bürgermeister on 16 May 1836 because he signed off on a legal notice published in the Königlich bayerisches Amts- und Intelligenzblatt für die Pfalz. However, it appears that he and Christian II Schowalter ended their terms early, possibly due to the reorganization of administrative units ("Gebietsreform") undertaken by King Ludwig in 1837.

Georg II Schranck, chosen as Adjunct in 1838 and again in 1843, was probably the Georg II Schranck who married of Catharina Elisabetha Engel, listed below.

1848 was, to put it mildly, a year of unrest. Of the 19 municipalities in Kanton Dürkheim that had Bürgermeisters chosen in 1843, only 12 had Bürgermeisters chosen in 1848. Three were chosen 21 Jun 1848 and five were chosen 23 Jun 1848, but four weren't chosen until 30 Sep 1848. Dackenheim was one of the seven missing.

Johannes II Mäurer, chosen as Adjunct in 1858, 1863, 1868 and 1874, was probably the Johannes II Mäurer who married Catharina Engel, listed below.

The Engels of Dackenheim seem to have been involved with local government and with other families also thus involved in a way that the Engels of Freinsheim - or really, anyone else I'm related to in Freinsheim! - weren't.
